Character Counts

The El Morro Character Counts program teaches character development based on six ethical values:
-
Trustworthiness
-
Respect
-
Responsibility
-
Fairness
-
Caring
-
Citizenship
At El Morro Elementary School your child is learning academics and character education. Developed by Michael Josephson, the program is called The Six Pillars of Character and is designed to teach children the qualities needed to have good character.
This Character Education program is being introduced through activities both in and outside of the classroom to all 1st-5th grade students. The first Monday of each month is FunDay Monday and kicks off that month’s Character Pillar with activities and demonstrations. Students have the opportunity to fill out compliment cards in their classroom. 2-3 compliment cards are selected for the Character Counts Awards Assembly and read aloud. Both the giver and receiver of the compliment receive a Character Counts backpack clip denoting the character theme. Some of these compliments are selected each month and read aloud to the student body at the last Friday Flag Ceremony. Both the giver and receiver of the compliment receive a wrist-band denoting the character theme.
Students are also recognized for demonstrating one of the six pillars of character from each 1st-5th grade classroom with a certificate and Character Counts T-Shirt. Teachers have the option of infusing character education into their lesson plans or having the School Counselor come into the class and give a special presentation on the topic.
